Support Ban on Trophy Hunting

As you may know, the U.S. government has quietly lifted its ban on the import of elephant and lion hunt trophies from Zambia and Zimbabwe. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials first moved to lift the ban in November 2017, until a huge global outcry led to a temporary hold. This new policy supersedes that decision, making it legal for Americans to bring body parts from elephants and lions killed for the sport back to the United States. Hunters can now receive permits for trophy items on a “case-by-case basis."

As champions of African elephants and lions — which have been listed as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act - we are extremely disappointed and disheartened by this decision. Now, more than ever, it is crucial to take civil and significant action:

  • Contact your local representative and urge them to initiate a local ban in your state to halt the import of lion and elephant-hunt trophies. Find your local elected official(s).
  • Contact the Secretary of the Interior, Ryan Zinke, and share why you are against the ban. Secretary Zinke is understood to be a strong game hunter proponent - but it is still important to show that you, as a U.S. citizen, do not support the proposed changes. Download a template letter.
  • Contact the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and explain why reversing the ban is detrimental to elephants and lions. Download a template letter.
  • Share why trophy hunting is damaging to conservation efforts. Read this informative paper [click the orange "Download This Paper" button for the full paper].
  • Put pressure on commercial airlines and package delivery companies to create and/or strictly enforce policies against transporting lion and elephant trophies into the US.

We saw the power of our collective efforts last November - and we must continue to champion these threatened species and help secure their futures. Thank you for helping to be a voice for elephants and lions and their future.
